UK candidates experiencing financial hardship can apply for a bursary to take the test free of charge. The bursary application deadline is typically in late September. How is the UCAT scored?
Each of the three cognitive subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning) is scored on a scale from 300 to 900. Your total UCAT score is the sum of these three subtests, ranging from 900 to 2700. The Situational Judgement Test is scored separately in bands from Band 1 (highest) to Band 4 (lowest). There is no negative marking, so you should attempt every question. The 90th percentile around 2230.
When should I take the UCAT?
You should take the UCAT between July and September of the year you’re applying to university (the year before you start your course). It’s recommended to book your test early in the testing window to secure your preferred date and location. Most students take it in July or August to have results before finalizing their UCAS application. You’ll receive your results immediately after completing the test.
Do I need a UCAT preparation course?
While it’s possible to prepare independently, structured UCAT preparation significantly improves performance. The test requires specific strategies and time management skills that differ from typical academic exams. Our course familiarizes you with question types, teaches efficient problem-solving techniques, and provides extensive practice with realistic questions. Students who prepare strategically typically score 200-400 points higher than those who don’t prepare adequately.
What makes your program different from online learning platforms?
While online platforms provide excellent question banks, our program offers personalized one-on-one instruction that adapts to your specific learning needs. You receive dedicated attention from expert tutors who have mastered the UCAT, customized study plans based on your diagnostic results, real-time doubt clearing, and detailed mock test analysis. We combine the best of both worlds: comprehensive materials plus personalized teaching that platforms alone cannot provide.
Can I retake the UCAT if I'm not happy with my score?
You can only sit the UCAT once per application cycle. If you’re applying for entry in 2027, you can take it once during the 2026 testing window (July-September 2026). If unsuccessful in your application, you can retake the UCAT in the next cycle when reapplying. This makes thorough preparation crucial, as you only get one opportunity per application year.
Are calculators allowed in the UCAT?
Yes, an on-screen calculator is provided for the Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning sections. However, it’s a very basic four-function calculator (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and differs from scientific calculators. We strongly recommend practicing with the UCAT’s on-screen calculator well before test day, as its functionality and interface can affect your speed. Free practice tests on the official UCAT website allow you to familiarize yourself with this calculator.
What happens if I need extra time or special accommodations?
If you have a documented disability or medical condition, you can apply for Access Arrangements, which may include extra time (typically 25% additional), rest breaks, or other accommodations. Applications must be submitted with supporting documentation by the Access Arrangement deadline (usually mid-September). Our tutors can work with your extended time requirements during preparation to ensure you’re ready for the actual test conditions.
